For years, students across the country have enjoyed the advent of a new educational advancement: online learning. Allowing for a more individualized learning experience, virtual schools have become increasingly popular. In fact, here in Atlanta, parents can enroll their children in Georgia Cyber Academy (GCA),
a Title 1 Online Public Charter School that is accredited by AdvancED and dedicated to providing a, rigorous learning environment It provides the experience of a traditional Brick and Mortar school from the comfort of your very own home!
How does it work?
Serving students in Kindergarten through 12th grade, GCA provides a strong academic foundation based on the Georgia Standards of Excellence, which are determined by The Georgia Department of Education Division of Curriculum and Instruction. Students attend classes via an online learning management system, which acts as a single location for students to access everything from course materials, assessments and grades. They also use this platform to engage with teachers, staff, and peers. It is a supportive online community that allows students to fulfill academic requirements in language arts, math, science, history, physical education, art and more with the guidance of certified teachers who provide live, real-time direct instruction.
What about Extracurriculars?
What’s more, the experience goes beyond academics, and invites students to enjoy a robust school life experience as well. For instance, elementary students can participate in clubs ranging from Baking Club and Guitar Club, to Young Artists and the Health/Fitness Club. Middle school students can participate in activities like the Book Dragons Club, the Babysitters Club and STEM Gems, among others. And High School clubs include Student Council, the Aspiring Medical Professionals Club, the Coding & Robotics Club, and the Geography Club to name a few.
Additionally, students can participate in a number of state and country-wide academic competitions including spelling bees and science fairs.. And while GCA core courses are not NCAA eligible for students who would like to play sports, students can take courses through a dual enrollment program with the Georgia Virtual School, allowing them to receive NCAA eligibility.
